En Febrero de 2016, la Organización Mundial de la Salud declaró, un brote del virus Zika en América Latina y otros lugares, como una emergencia de salud pública de preocupación internacional, porque el virus Zika puede causar defectos de nacimiento y problemas neurológicos. Desde entonces, el virus Zika ha sido un tema de preocupación en los medios de comunicación. Aunque es un tema sensacionalista, la realidad es que el Zika es un virus transmitido por mosquitos que no causan ninguna enfermedad en algunas personas y una enfermedad leve a moderada en otros, durando alrededor de una semana. La gran mayoría de los infectados con el virus Zika no se enferman seriamente. Sin embargo, se ha demostrado que el virus Zika puede causar graves defectos congénitos en niños nacidos de madres infectadas. En algunas personas, también se ha relacionado con el trastorno neurológico llamado  síndrome de Guillain-Barré. Este curso trata sobre el descubrimiento, transmisión, síntomas, diagnósticos, tratamiento, riesgos y prevención del virus Zika.
